Premier Scott Moe speaks on trade dispute, announces retaliatory tariffs on U.S. booze

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is set to address the media about Ottawa's counter-tariff measures on Wednesday at 1 p.m., in Prince Albert. This comes a day after the province declared its support for the federal government's strategy. Moe described the national approach as "focused and targeted." His government is analyzing the counter-tariff list closely, assessing its potential impact on jobs and consumer prices, and reviewing federal support measures to ensure they benefit Saskatchewan businesses and workers.

The counter-tariffs will cover 11.3% or $1.5 billion of Saskatchewan's annual imports from the U.S. Over 700 goods, including harvesting or threshing machinery, natural honey, plywood, veneered panels, and similar laminated wood, are subject to these tariffs. Moe emphasized that while these measures are a justified response to recent U.S. tariffs, they must not overshadow the fact that tariffs hurt businesses, jobs, consumers, and families on both sides of the border. The ultimate goal should be to restore a free and fair trade relationship with the U.S.

Counter-tariff measures will commence on September 8 and are projected to target $27.6 billion in U.S. imports.
