Pierrefonds residents flooded again after rain, raising concerns over infrastructure

Recent heavy rains have once again triggered flooding in the Pierrefonds neighbourhood, prompting concerns over inadequate infrastructure. Chad Watson, a resident, has experienced this situation three times before - in August 2024, June, and now on Monday. The flooding has caused significant emotional distress for him, as he constantly worries about potential water damage during rainstorms. Watson claims the city isn't doing enough to address the issue.

Many Monk Street residents face another challenge - insurance coverage. Neighbour Kim lost his insurance protection for water damage after two claims in the last three years. He is now struggling to find a new insurer and repair contractors for flood-proofing his home. The cleanup from Monday's downpour is already underway, with flooring and drywall removed from affected homes.

Fleming Street residents also report feeling abandoned by the city as they continue to deal with water issues. Natalie Zajda, a resident, recounted the stress of mopping and pumping water out with the city on hold. City officials informed her of a pump battery issue, causing her to fear the pump won't function in future rainstorms.

After a council meeting on August 3, residents flooded the room with questions about flooding and infrastructure. However, Borough Mayor Jim Beis stated he couldn't provide more information due to a class-action lawsuit. Residents argue they deserve answers sooner rather than waiting years for protection. Attempts to reach the mayor and a borough spokesperson for comment have gone unanswered.
