Outrage in Nepal over rape and murder of three-year-old girl

Activists and politicians in Nepal have called for stricter laws following the alleged rape and murder of a three-year-old girl, which has sparked widespread outrage across the country. The child was discovered dead last week, three days after she went missing in Madhesh province. Nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, according to a local police spokesman.

The incident has fueled demands for reform, with police facing accusations of negligence during the initial stages of the investigation. Footage of a teenage suspect was leaked onto social media, raising questions about how such footage of an individual in police custody was obtained. The chief district officer of Bara district confirmed that one police personnel was directly involved in the leak and has initiated action against him. If additional officers are found responsible, they too will face punishment.

The victim's family met with government ministers over the weekend and secured a written agreement. The government has pledged to review laws on serious offenses and establish a memorial in the girl's honor.

The tragedy has also ignited a broader discussion regarding how Nepal handles young offenders, with some campaigners advocating for stricter penalties for minors convicted of rape or murder. Prominent human rights activist Gauri Pradhan called the attack "a very painful incident" and urged the government to punish those involved in the "atrocious act," while warning against the introduction of the death penalty.
