Ogun Govt introduces rent-to-own housing scheme

The Ogun State Government has launched a new Rent-to-Own housing scheme in an effort to make homeownership more attainable for residents and generate employment opportunities for artisans throughout the region. During a recent discussion, Commissioner for Housing Jamiu Omoniyi revealed the government's innovative approach to tackling high construction costs and the financial constraints faced by potential homeowners.

One key component of the new initiative is the partnership with Gateway Mortgage Bank to facilitate the Prince Court Estate project in Kobape Phase IV, which offers a Rent-to-Own option to those unable to pay the full price upfront. This model represents the government's shift from merely constructing homes to implementing sustainable financing pathways for beneficiaries.

Existing estates in Kobape Phases I-III, Kemta, Itanrin, Ikenne, and Iperu are already part of the state's commitment to serving middle-income earners. Moreover, the government has embarked on the regeneration of older communities, such as Ibara GRA, Abeokuta and GRA Ijebu-Ode, with the aim of enhancing living conditions and stimulating local economic activities.

The adoption of direct-labour construction methods has also resulted in the engagement of over 5,000 artisans across multiple project sites, which not only brings down construction costs but also encourages effective monitoring and supports local content providers within the built environment. The government is also offering land subsidies and infrastructure support in its projects to alleviate the financial strain on buyers.

To further strengthen homeownership security, the ministry is clearing a backlog of title documents, including for those who purchased estates before 2019. Omoniyi encouraged residents to apply for government housing schemes, promising that the ministry will closely monitor developments and address any speculation. The ultimate goal of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration is to ensure that the state's affordable housing interventions result in secure and sustainable homeownership for residents while simultaneously boosting economic activities within the state's built environment.
