Ogun family seeks justice over alleged police killing of ‘breadwinner’

The family of Owolabi Oniyiku, an alleged victim of a police shooting in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, has called for an investigation into the incident and for the dismissal of the officers involved, alleging harassment and extortion. The victim's relative, Kolade Oniyiku, recounted the events leading to the death, stating that Oniyiku had returned home to celebrate the Oro festival and was planning to travel back on Wednesday when he encountered the police at Akinde Junction.

According to Kolade, the officers had seized some motorcycles, causing apprehension for other motorcyclists. Oniyiku approached the police, asking for permission to pass through, but an argument ensued, and the police officer allegedly opened fire without giving Oniyiku a chance to react. Kolade expressed disappointment that no police officer had visited the family or contacted them following the incident.

He emphasized that Oniyiku was the main breadwinner of the family, providing for his mother and younger siblings. The family is seeking accountability and an end to frequent roadblocks and extortion by security personnel along the road.
