Octopus Boss Warns UK Is Too Exposed to Global Gas Prices

Octopus boss Greg Jackson has urged Labour MP Andy Burnham to implement urgent market reforms to shield British households from soaring gas prices. While the government's decision to exempt VAT from electricity and reduce certain levies has somewhat mitigated the impact this winter, prices remain prohibitively high. The recent escalation in global gas prices, driven by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, has seen rates more than double since the beginning of the year.

To truly alleviate the burden, Jackson advocates for market reform, increased utilization of wind power, and ensuring consumers reap the benefits of cheap green energy during its abundance. This call for reform follows Ofgem's decision to hike its household bill cap by four percent to £1,723 annually in October, and projections suggest it will rise another nine percent to £1,872 by January next year.

Analysts at Boston Consulting warn that households could face a £264 increase in energy bills over the next decade. Burnham has been asked to consider permitting North Sea drilling to bolster energy security and drive down costs, but Prime Minister reports are suggesting a delay in his decision until autumn, out of concern for the political optics of approving new drilling during a summer of extreme heat, drought, and wildfires.

Burnham's pledge to reduce living costs for working households has drawn criticism from opposition figures, with Shadow Environment Secretary Victoria Atkins condemning the hikes as "outrageous" and highlighting the inadequacy of current measures, especially for those reliant on the winter fuel allowance.
