NRSA to deploy Traffictech to apprehend traffic offenders, introduce mandatory towing to curb crashes

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) plans to deploy a technology-based system called Traffictech to monitor motorists and apprehend those who break traffic rules. Director-General Mr Abraham Amaliba explained that the system would use cameras and monitoring devices at strategic locations to identify offenders. Unlike the traditional method of police officers identifying offenders manually, Traffictech would use technology to improve enforcement.

The system will capture about 16 traffic offences, including those causing crashes due to broken-down vehicles. To reduce such crashes, Mr Amaliba announced plans for a mandatory towing system. Vehicle owners will be required to register or subscribe to a towing company or insurance company. In case of a breakdown, they can call their subscriber, and the towing company will remove the vehicle.

A dedicated towing platform, akin to a ride-hailing service, will connect motorists to the nearest registered towing company. NRSA will also launch a nationwide public education campaign to raise awareness about the new law. Alhaji Saaka Dumba, President of CILT Ghana, urged for a transport system that considers the needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
