NPP rejects claims of electing wanted Tolon violence suspect as youth organiser

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly rejected allegations that Alhaji Abdul-Latif Copshe, a suspect in the 2024 election-related violence in Tolon, has been appointed as the party's Constituency Youth Organiser. NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed clarified that the position currently belongs to Ibrahim Abdel Wahab, not Mr. Copshe, who is currently sought by security agencies in connection with the incident.

The clarification came after Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak's statement on August 24, 2026, that Mr. Copshe was declared the winner of the NPP's Constituency Youth Organiser election despite reportedly leaving the community post-incident. The December 7, 2024, violence in Nyankpala, which resulted in one death and several injuries, followed a confrontation over alleged vote-buying.

Mr. Mohammed dismissed the Interior Minister's claim, asserting that Mr. Copshe was never the party's Youth Organiser for Tolon. He explained that Mr. Copshe had previously held the position but no longer does, as his tenure expired after the constituency election in July. Regarding the possibility of Mr. Copshe being elected as the Constituency Organiser, Mr. Mohammed could not immediately confirm the claim, stating that he would need to verify the records from all 276 constituencies, which he was currently verifying for the Youth Organiser position.
