No new Iran strikes for now, Rubio tells allies as US tightens economic pressure

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has informed several allied foreign ministers that the United States does not currently plan to launch fresh military strikes on Iran. This shift in policy comes as the administration focuses on tightening economic and maritime pressures on Tehran. Officials cited by Axios reported that Rubio conveyed America's intention to avoid initiating new military strikes against Tehran for now.

Instead, the administration plans to leverage naval blockades, economic measures, and maintaining the flow of petroleum through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. While the US maintains that military options are not ruled out if Iran attacks first, American forces have not ruled out the military option. Washington has been engaged in clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in increased tanker traffic through the southern route.

The shift in strategy is seen as significant, as Tehran's ability to restrict maritime energy flows through the strait has been substantially reduced. The US naval blockade has also sharply curtailed Iran's oil exports. The administration has further tightened financial restrictions on Iran, warning foreign nations involved in trade with Iran that they could face severe penalties.

Despite these measures, Iran has denounced the attempt to isolate its financial apparatus and called it unlawful. Global oil markets experienced a drop in prices for a second consecutive day as traders discounted the immediate disruption caused by the updated sanctions. While the threat of major military operations has not been eliminated, the precise status of Iran's nuclear infrastructure remains unclear.
