NFL launches ‘3 strikes’ suspension system for dangerous tackles

On January 4, 2026, the NFL and NFL Players Association announced a new "on-field accountability system" aimed at enhancing player safety by focusing on techniques that commonly result in injuries. This revised system, approved by the board of Player Representatives, prioritizes five specific penalties: hip drop tackles, horse collar tackles, launching hits on defenseless players, blindside blocks, and roughing the passer.

Players committing three of these major penalties during a season will face a one-game suspension. Those committing one penalty will see half of their fine returned at season's end. The system also adjusts the "repeat offender" policy; player fine records will be reviewed at the end of each season, rather than every two, allowing for quicker removal from repeat offender status.

Players suspended under this system will enter the next season with a two-penalty record and face suspension for a third such penalty. However, if a player completes a season without additional major penalties, their record resets to zero. Players fined for a second offense in any category must meet with the NFL, along with their position coach and coordinator, and do not receive any money back at the season's end.

The new system is a one-year trial, with hopes for permanent implementation. Under this structure, only two players have been suspended in the past two years. This change may lead to more penalties being called early in the season, as heightened emphasis on these penalties draws additional scrutiny from officials. Additionally, video officials can now review both "flagrant football acts and non-football acts," even if initially missed on the field, potentially resulting in player ejections.
