NFL Announces Major Change That Could Result in More Suspensions

The NFL and its Players Association announced new disciplinary rules on Wednesday, set to take effect ahead of the 2026 season. The primary goal of these changes is to prioritize player safety by targeting techniques most likely to cause injuries rather than focusing solely on isolated mistakes made during games.

Players who accumulate three violations within any of five specified categories will face a one-game suspension. During a league meeting in Atlanta, teams were briefed on these modifications. It's worth noting that these violations will be carried over from year to year, but every player will begin the 2026 season with a clean record.

Despite these disciplinary actions, players will still receive fines for any violations committed. However, for those committing just one violation in a season, they will receive half of their fine refunded at the end of the year. This approach separates isolated errors from repeated conduct that directly endangers players' health and safety.

The league emphasized that player safety is a shared responsibility, with these new rules focusing on the techniques that pose the greatest risk while maintaining accountability among players, coaches, and clubs.
