NFL and players association announce Behavioral Health Network for mental health assistance

The NFL and NFL Players Association have unveiled a new Behavioral Health Network that will commence on September 1st. This initiative aims to simplify and secure access to mental health assistance for current and former players, as well as their eligible dependents. The expansion of the NFL Player Insurance Plan includes a nationwide network of providers, administered by Cigna Healthcare, tailored to the unique needs of the NFL community and their families.

The network will be accessible to all players, regardless of location, and will offer personalized support encompassing assistance with finding providers, checking appointment availability, and addressing benefit inquiries. Importantly, the services provided will be free of charge or coinsurance to the players. There is no cap on the number of visits, underscoring the NFL's commitment to ensuring comprehensive mental health support.

Dr. Nyaka NiiLampti, NFL's vice president of wellness and clinical services, emphasized the network's objective to reduce barriers to care and streamline the process for players and their families to connect with trusted mental health professionals. The network's primary goal is to facilitate quick identification and connection to high-quality mental health services, thereby enhancing overall wellness outcomes.

Similarly, Dr. Amber Cargill, director of player wellness at the NFLPA, reiterated the importance of mental and emotional well-being alongside physical health. She highlighted that the Behavioral Health Network represents a significant stride in providing trusted care to players and their families, fostering a culture where seeking support is actively encouraged.
