Muturi urges Parliament to table Elections Amendment Bill before IEBC tender contract

Nairobi, Kenya - Former National Assembly Speaker and Democratic Party of Kenya leader Justin Muturi has urged Parliament to swiftly introduce the Elections Amendment Bill, 2024, before the signing of the tender contract for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's technology. Muturi believes that the Bill's provisions would bolster safeguards for the 2027 General Election.

He expressed concern over the 17-month delay in debating the NADCO recommendations, which stemmed from a bipartisan initiative involving extensive public participation. "How can a Bill arising from such a process remain in committee for 17 months? At what point does prolonged inaction cease to be ordinary legislative delay and become a glaring question of sabotage?" he asked.

Muturi called on MPs to question Speaker Moses Wetang'ula for a timely debate and insisted that Parliament must act before the IEBC technology tender is awarded, ensuring appropriate legal safeguards are in place for the 2027 elections. He also challenged incumbent President William Ruto to support the legislation if Parliament approves it, emphasizing the urgency of a transparent and credible electoral process.
