Mumbai: Western Railway Makes Red-And-Black Uniform, Gloves And Hair Nets Mandatory For Catering Staff From September 10

Mumbai, August 26, 2026: Western Railway has mandated a standardized uniform for all catering staff in licensed food stalls within the Mumbai division, effective September 10. This includes a red polo T-shirt with a black collar, buttons, and borders, black trousers, a black half-apron, and black footwear. The uniform must be clean, ironed, and well-maintained. Additionally, staff will be required to wear disposable gloves and hair nets while on duty.

The decision, aimed at enhancing food safety and hygiene, follows a recent incident where samosas at a Boisar catering outlet were found wrapped in newspaper. Western Railway has intensified checks on catering units across the Mumbai division since then. Adish Pathania, Senior Divisional Commercial Railway Manager, has directed all licensed catering operators to enforce the new dress and hygiene standards for their staff.

The uniform is expected to give catering staff a more professional look, while the mandatory use of gloves and hair nets aims to improve food-handling practices. Station Commercial Managers and Commercial Inspectors have been tasked with verifying uniforms and hygiene practices during inspections, with reports to be sent to the divisional office. Non-compliance could result in punitive actions against both the license holder and the staff.
