Muhoozi declares presidential bid, predicts landslide win with Museveni’s backing

Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has expressed confidence in his prospects of winning the 2031 presidential election. He anticipates receiving 90% of the vote due to his father, President Yoweri Museveni's support. Muhoozi announced his intention to run for the highest office in Uganda in 2031, alongside a photo of himself with President Museveni.

This declaration follows his initial support for Museveni in the 2026 elections, rather than contesting them himself. Muhoozi's political ambitions have been a subject of debate, with a recent study in African Affairs indicating that while he is seen as a strong potential successor, his personal approval rating lags behind his father's, at 35% compared to 54% for Museveni.

Despite this, Muhoozi's latest statement suggests he may indeed seek the presidency in 2031, potentially marking a significant test of how Museveni's influence will be passed down to his son. This comes at a time when former presidential candidate Bobi Wine is currently in the United States, fearing arrest following his opposition to Museveni, and several of his supporters being arrested and threatened with imprisonment, similar to Kizza Besigye, who has been in jail for two years.
