Mudslide from Nepal causes ‘major casualties’ at Tibet border

BEIJING, Aug 26 — A powerful mudslide originating in Nepal has resulted in "major casualties" and left people missing at a critical trade hub on the Tibet border, according to Chinese state media reports. CCTV, China's state broadcaster, stated that the disaster struck Gyirong Port, located on the Chinese side of the border between China and Nepal. However, the exact number of fatalities, injuries, and missing persons was not disclosed in the report.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has declared an "all-out" rescue operation, prioritizing the search for and rescue of missing individuals, the prompt treatment of injured persons, and minimizing further casualties, as reported by CCTV. Footage from CCTV showed the fast-flowing water carrying tree branches and debris, as well as a flooded road; however, AFP was unable to independently verify these images.

It is worth noting that in July 2025, another mudslide near Gyirong Port left 17 people reported missing. At the time of reporting, AFP has not independently confirmed the casualty figures provided by Chinese and Nepali official sources.
