West Long Branch - The opening bell rang for Monmouth football practice on Tuesday, with the Osborne Brothers' rendition of Rocky Top blaring through the speakers. This signaled the transition from training camp to game week as the Hawks prepared to face No. 15 Tennessee Tech in a rare season-opening matchup of top 25 teams in the FCS.

Head coach Jeff Gallo emphasized the team's collective ambition, stating that "this team has something to prove as a collective unit. It's got talent, it's got ability, but it's about our ability every day to keep elevating the standard of our program and push that championship level on a daily basis." The Hawks' first game presents an opportunity to prove whether they are at championship level or need more work to reach it.

Gallo's experience as an offensive coordinator and an organized succession plan has allowed him to hit the ground running as a first-year head coach. He reflected on his continuous learning process, stating, "You're constantly learning in any position you're at. So you're setting a schedule, it's all new to you. Even if some of the things were the same as you did in the past, it's doing new things with people I know."

Senior Gavin Nelson, who had a breakout game last season against Colgate, is poised to lead the receiving corps as a captain and preseason All-CAA selection. Nelson highlighted the importance of consistent effort: "It's just the work you put in day-by-day when no one's watching. The more work you do, it's just going to show out on Saturdays."

The team's motivation is fueled by a combination of anger and frustration over last year's playoff loss and a deep sense of purpose in honoring the late defensive coordinator Louis DiRienzo Jr., who passed away in June. Gallo noted, "This team is more hungry and we've got a lot to prove this year."
