Meta, US states have discussed settling teen social media harm case, Bloomberg News reports

Meta Platforms and U.S. state attorneys general have reportedly explored a potential mid-trial settlement, according to Bloomberg News. The company is facing allegations that it knowingly designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for young users. This situation is unfolding amidst a federal court trial in California, involving claims from 29 states.

The trial, which commenced on August 12, is one of the most prominent cases examining the alleged harm inflicted on young users by social media entities. Just prior to jury selection, a federal appeals court refused to halt the proceedings. Both Meta and attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey declined to comment on the matter.

In response to the situation, several state attorneys general issued advisories, announcing their plans for press conferences. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford's office specifically announced it would reveal a significant consumer protection settlement involving a major technology firm. These claims are part of a growing number of lawsuits filed by states, local governments, school districts, and individuals, asserting that Meta and other social media platforms have contributed to a national youth mental health crisis.

The federal court trial addressed claims from the attorneys general of Colorado, California, Kentucky, and New Jersey that Meta breached state laws safeguarding consumers.
