Meta reaches settlement over social media case

Meta Platforms agreed to pay up to $16.68 billion and make significant changes to Facebook and Instagram to settle claims made by states across the U.S. that the company knowingly designed these platforms to addict children, mislead consumers about their safety, and improperly collect children's personal data. Professor Carol Rossini from the University of Massachusetts Amherst emphasized that while the settlement amount is a start, it does not address the ongoing harm caused by the addictive design of the platforms.

She stressed the need for genuine redesign, independent audits, researcher access to platform data, and enforceable benchmarks with penalties for non-compliance. Meta has previously promised to change its ways but has failed to do so in the past. Analysts noted that the settlement is a relief for shareholders, as it removes a major uncertainty weighing on Meta's shares.

However, there are still many lawsuits and cases against the company that need resolution. Some experts believe the settlement signals a shift in regulatory scrutiny and public opinion towards holding social media companies more accountable, particularly in protecting children and reducing their addiction to the platforms.
