Merrill, Vásquez lead the Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Pirates

In a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, the San Diego Padres avoided a three-game sweep and maintained their third wild-card spot in the National League, one game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres have won 12 of 17 and 22 of 31 games so far. Jackson Merrill was a standout performer, doubling, tripling, driving in a run, and scoring a second run.

Randy Vásquez contributed to the win by reaching 10 victories, pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters. Vásquez struck out nine batters and walked two before ending the game with a strikeout in the fourth inning. The Padres have now won their 10th shutout of the season.
