Matthew Brennan sprints for a second Vuelta stage win as Tadej Pogačar stays in control

Matthew Brennan secured his second stage win in the 2023 Spanish Vuelta on Wednesday through a powerful sprint finish. The 21-year-old British cyclist from Visma-Lease a Bike surged past the field in the final meters to claim victory in the fifth stage. This marks Brennan's second Grand Tour triumph, having previously won the Vuelta's second stage earlier in the race.

Defending Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar, riding for UAE Team Emirates, maintained his overall lead in the competition. Pogačar, who won the Vuelta's first stage and the Tour’s fourth stage, held a commanding 3-minute, 21-second advantage over Primoz Roglic and his fellow teammates. Pogačar, a three-time Tour de France winner and record-tying fifth Grand Tour champion, made his Vuelta debut in 2019 and returned to the race this year, putting him on track to become the ninth male cyclist to win all three prestigious Grand Tours.

The Vuelta, which concluded in Granada, Spain, on September 13, traversed a challenging hilly route that began in Catalonia.
