Marineland beluga dies shortly after move to Chicago aquarium

One of the beluga whales transported from Marineland to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has sadly passed away only weeks after arriving in the U.S. Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga, died suddenly on Tuesday. Shedd Aquarium's vice-president of animal care, Andrew Pulver, noted she had arrived as part of an eight-member group and was unique due to being blind in one eye, being one of the smaller whales.

Despite potential limitations, Peekachu socialized easily and adapted well to her new habitat at the aquarium. However, recent days saw a decline in her health, with her not consistently eating her full diet. Blood samples revealed concern for dehydration and a need for supportive care. While the exact cause of her death remains unknown, a necropsy report will provide more insights into her health status and potential factors leading to her demise.

Some animal welfare groups have called it a direct consequence of transporting her in a state of compromised health. Marineland expressed deep sorrow over Peekachu's passing and credited Shedd Aquarium for their partnership in the relocation. The transportation of belugas from Marineland to several aquariums across the U.S. and Spain, including Shedd Aquarium, is part of a deal with an international group of marine parks.

U.S. authorities approved the "emergency rescue" earlier this month. After the latest move, just six belugas remain at Marineland, set to head to another U.S. aquarium soon. Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed her confidence in the receiving facilities and emphasized that rescue operations give the animals the best chance for survival.
