Look beyond racial and political lines this Merdeka, urges Sultan of Selangor

On August 26, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor called upon Malaysians to leverage this year’s Merdeka celebrations to foster national unity, transcending racial, religious, and political divides. The Sultan officiated a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Selangor, signalling the commencement of the official flag-flying period until September 17 in celebration of Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day.

The Sultan emphasized that despite differences in race, religion, language, political ideology, and backgrounds, the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, symbolizes unity among all Malaysian citizens. He urged citizens to celebrate their shared nationality and take pride in the flag, which represents national unity.

Sultan Sharafuddin stressed that the spirit of Merdeka should extend beyond ceremonial events, calling for citizens to honor those who have worked to bridge communal divides. He highlighted the importance of instilling mutual respect and appreciation for diverse cultures, races, and faiths in younger generations. Addressing political leaders, the Sultan stressed their responsibility to exemplify moderation, tolerance, and compassion, refraining from using differences in politics, race, or religion to divide the populace.

While hoisting thousands of flags during Merdeka month is relatively simple, the Sultan pointed out that the true challenge lies in creating a nation where every Malaysian feels respected, valued, and proud of their citizenship. He reinforced that the Jalur Gemilang does not discriminate based on ethnicity—whether Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan-Dusun, Iban, or other groups—or religious affiliation, encompassing Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism.

The Sultan concluded that independence means more than celebrating a historical event; it entails the collective ability to foster a peaceful, mutually respectful, and united society.
