Kaduna: Basic Education Is A Right Not A Privilege—Uba Sani

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State is committed to making basic education a fundamental right for every child of school age, not a privilege, according to Malam Mubarak Mohammed, the Executive Chairman of Kaduna State Universal Basic Education. Speaking at the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Market on Wednesday, Mohammed emphasized that the state's administration views education as a right, not a privilege, and that it is illegal for children of school age to wander the streets during school hours.

Mohammed lamented the high rate of out-of-school children in Northern Nigeria and praised Governor Sani for successfully enrolling more than 360,000 children back into schools. This effort has reduced the number of out-of-school children from over 500,000 to less than 140,000. Mohammed urged parents and guardians to enroll their children in schools, stating that education is a powerful equalizer that can uplift children from humble backgrounds.

The Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has constructed over 2,000 classrooms to accommodate the surge in new pupils. In a recent initiative, SUBEB launched the 2026/2027 School Enrollment Campaign, which involved a road walk from the State Secretariat to the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Market. During this campaign, speeches were delivered to raise awareness on the significance of basic education.

Five children showed up for enrollment, and the Executive Chairman instructed relevant officials to ensure their admission into primary school.
