A San Diego Padres minor league coaching coordinator, Oswaldo Pirela, who was detained by federal immigration officers in Texas, has been released on bond, his family announced on Tuesday. Pirela, who originally hails from Venezuela but resides in Arizona, returned home to his family on Monday after his release, according to his sister Daniela Pirela.

The Padres organization confirmed that Pirela, who serves as a catching coordinator in their minor league system, is no longer under custody. The team expressed satisfaction at Pirela's release and reunification with his family, stating they would not provide further comment due to the ongoing situation. Pirela was apprehended at El Paso International Airport on August 16 during a work trip to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres' minor league affiliate team based in Texas.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated that Pirela had overstayed his welcome in the U.S. since 2018, despite his family asserting that he had applied for asylum and secured work permits upon arriving in the country legally in 2014. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment on the matter when contacted by the news outlet.
