Instagram can now create Reels automatically – but Meta doesn’t want to upset creators

Instagram has introduced a new feature called First Draft, exclusive to iPhone users, that can automatically create Reels from video clips. Users can select their clips and tap a single button to have the app trim the pauses and cut down the clips, providing a starting point for further creative editing. The feature is reversible, allowing users to adjust or reorder the edits before proceeding to the full editor or publishing.

First Draft is currently only available on the iPhone app, with an Android version expected soon. While the company is cautious not to replace creators' editing skills, the feature can also be accessed in the main Instagram app. Some creators have questioned why the feature is in the main app and not in the dedicated Edits app, but Meta has stated that it could be made available in both apps if desired.
