Indian Railways hikes fine to Rs 1,000 for littering stations, trains

The Indian Railways has heightened its penalties for littering at stations and on trains, now imposing a fine of Rs 1,000. This increase, effective from the gazette notification dated August 24, aims to maintain cleanliness and discourage passengers from violating cleanliness rules. The Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Amendment Rules, 2026, replace the previous maximum fine of Rs 500 with the new Rs 1,000 fine.

Failure to pay the fine could result in a court appearance, where the fine could extend up to Rs 2,000. The rule amendment specifies that littering, cooking, bathing, spitting, urinating, defecating, feeding animals or birds, washing items or storing belongings on railway premises, without designated facilities, or defacing property are prohibited.

Permit holders, such as authorized vendors and hawkers, are responsible for providing dustbins and ensuring proper waste disposal. Railway authorities, including Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, and other officials authorized by the Railway Administration, are empowered to collect the penalties.
