IEC calls on traditional leaders to support local elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reached out to traditional leaders in South Africa, urging them to support preparations for upcoming local government elections. A meeting was held with the Congress of Traditional Leaders in Kempton Park, East of Johannesburg, during which the electoral commission shared its election roadmap until November 4.

Mosotho Moepya, Chairperson of the IEC, emphasized the importance of traditional leaders in informing their constituents about the electoral process. She requested their assistance in educating those they lead, ensuring they are well-informed and exercise their franchise knowledgeably. Moepya also called for the protection of IEC staff, who often face attacks, especially during nighttime.

Kgoshi Mathupa Mokoena, President of the Congress of Traditional Leaders, urged traditional leaders to facilitate democracy by creating a fair environment for all candidates in the local elections. While some communities demand traditional leadership to contest the elections, Mokoena stressed that traditional leaders should represent everyone, irrespective of political affiliation. He emphasized that there should be no area where any organization is barred from operating, and it is up to the people to decide their votes.

The meeting also focused on the role of traditional leaders in promoting democracy, research, and effective communication in strengthening voter participation. Key discussions included the importance of voter education, research, and communication campaigns in supporting evidence-based approaches for the electoral process.
