This new universe is the result of a recent shift in strategy, with the decision to move away from the Ultimate and Absolute Universes, which have been popular but are ending.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson, one of the three writers behind Midnight Spider-Man, shared his thoughts on the project. He explained that he had permission to take the project in a more extreme direction, with horror at the forefront and superhero elements in the background. This allowed him to reimagine Spider-Man in a way that had never been done before, creating a truly unique and terrifying take on the iconic hero.

The Midnight Universe differs from the Ultimate Universe in that it is not limited to the two-year real-time format established by Jonathan Hickman. Instead, the Midnight Universe is a complete reimagining of the entire Marvel Universe, with a focus on classic characters given new, horrific twists.

When the Midnight Universe was first announced, there was some pushback from fans who expected to see more traditional horror characters like Blade and the Midnight Sons. However, Johnson explained that while these characters will certainly make an appearance in the future, the initial focus was on Marvel's most iconic and classic heroes. He emphasized that the Midnight Universe is not just a collection of horror titles, but a complete reimagining of the entire Marvel Universe, with a completely new approach.
