KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Hong Kong star Angela Yuen has proven herself as a talented performer through her diverse roles in various productions. Her latest acting gig is in Keane T.K. Wong's film Afterpiece, where she portrays the complex character Hannah, a theatre actress. Wong intentionally crafted Hannah's role for Yuen, and the director and actress met in Kuala Lumpur on August 21 for the premiere of the film at the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation.

Yuen was drawn to the role due to her friendship with the director, her interest in Hannah's complex personality, and the character's strong sense of autonomy, which is often lacking in female characters, particularly in Asian cinema. The actress noted that Hannah is fierce, feisty, and unapologetic, making it a thrilling role to play.

When asked about similarities between herself and Hannah, Yuen playfully mentioned their shared Scorpio sign and acknowledged the character's darker side, though she emphasized she would never act on those feelings.

Looking ahead to future roles, Yuen expressed a desire to see more nuanced and strong female representations in Asian cinema. She believes that cultural factors and patriarchy contribute to the limited portrayal of women in the industry. Despite the challenges she faced early in her career, Yuen has grown to understand the importance of kindness in her craft. She believes that being kind allows actors to empathize with their characters, notice subtle details, and create meaningful work.
