High quality, low risk: record number of Japanese in Premier League

TOKYO: This season sees a record number of Japanese players in the Premier League, with clubs drawn to their quality, affordable costs, and minimal risk. Ten Japanese players have registered with top-tier English teams this season, with more likely to join before the transfer window closes. Zion Suzuki, who moved from Parma to Aston Villa, is the most prominent arrival, followed by Takehiro Tomiyasu back to Crystal Palace from Arsenal, Hidemasa Morita to Hull City, and Daizen Maeda to Ipswich Town.

These new signings are joined by established Japanese players already in the Premier League, including Kaoru Mitoma at Brighton, Wataru Endo at Liverpool, and Daichi Kamada at Palace. FIFA-registered agent Joel Pannick of CAA Base attributes this trend to English clubs' increased confidence in signing Japanese players. Pannick notes that there have been few instances of issues with adaptation, integration, or discipline among Japanese players in the Premier League.

Ao Tanaka, Kota Takai, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto are among the other Japanese players in the league. The journey for Japanese players in England has evolved since Junichi Inamoto's move to Arsenal in 2001, with recent successes like Shinji Kagawa, Shinji Okazaki, Takumi Minamino, and Wataru Endo winning league titles. The rising prominence of Japanese players can be attributed to their worldly mentality, improved language skills, and the league's changing nature, which now includes more tactical play and a greater emphasis on coordinated teamwork.
