Heartbreak and hope as injured elephant ‘Sulong’ treks 100km back to Gua Musang

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — An injured wild male elephant named Sulong Chalil has taken the nation by storm as he embarked on a journey to return to his home habitat in Gua Musang, Kelantan. Initially relocated to Gerik, Perak, the elephant has drawn widespread sympathy on social media as he treks along the East-West Highway (JRTB). Known for his injury to his right front leg, Sulong has been closely monitored by Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) rangers who confirm that he remains in stable condition.

Perhilitan's teams are actively patrolling the area, ensuring his safety and preventing any incidents with oncoming traffic. The name "Chalil" originated from the village in Gua Musang, where the elephant once roamed before being captured. Residents had complained about the elephants entering their plantations, leading to his capture and relocation.

However, a few days after being released in the Gerik jungle, Sulong appeared along the Gerik-Jeli route and has been walking towards Kelantan, covering over 100 kilometres along the Titiwangsa Range. Social media users have expressed their support and prayers for the elephant's safe return home, acknowledging his homesickness and the challenges he has faced.
