Govt explores regulatory framework for e-commerce platforms

PUTRAJAYA: The Communications and Finance Ministries are currently examining a regulatory framework for e-commerce platforms, in response to public concerns over safety standards and halal compliance of online items, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil disclosed. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim directed this initiative during a Cabinet meeting today, aiming to safeguard consumers from misleading or inferior products.

Reports suggested several unregulated e-commerce platforms, raising doubts about the quality of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the halal status of goods sold on these platforms. Consequently, the Prime Minister tasked the two ministries to expedite the creation of regulatory procedures, including mandatory registration for e-commerce platforms, during a press briefing today.
