Government rejects MTN’s GH¢20m donation for Xenophobia attack victims

The Ghanaian government has turned down a GH¢20 million donation proposed by MTN Ghana to assist victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed this on Wednesday, stating they were aware of media reports hinting at the MTN proposal, which originated from remarks by MTN Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, during an interview.

Despite the government appreciating MTN's gesture, it opted not to accept the offer, citing that sufficient arrangements had already been put in place to aid Ghanaians impacted by the attacks. The Ministry affirmed that the Mahama government had already prepared adequate measures for the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians from South Africa, rendering the proposed donation redundant.

The government had previously communicated this stance directly to MTN's Board Chairman and CEO during a meeting on August 14, 2026. Nevertheless, the government pledged its continued commitment to providing humanitarian evacuation and reintegration support to every Ghanaian returned from harm's way. The Ministry assured the public of forthcoming transparency, promising to disclose the total cost of the evacuation exercise upon completion.

The government also reiterated its dedication to fostering a conducive business environment for international companies operating in Ghana, irrespective of their origin. The Ministry emphasized that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains its top priority.
