Gifts from the “Coalition of the Willing” for the 35th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence

On August 24, Kyiv hosted the inaugural meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing." The meeting brought together representatives from 30 of the coalition's 37 participating countries, with officials attending in person or via video link. The meeting marked a significant shift in Western strategy, moving from emergency resuscitation to the systematic institutionalization of Ukraine's defense capabilities.

Russia, which had sought to rapidly "demilitarize" Ukraine, has instead achieved the opposite on the 35th anniversary of Ukrainian independence, with European defense giants now transferring classified technologies to Kyiv to enable local production of long-range missiles. The meeting was co-chaired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

During the summit, three key tracks emerged: the need for a ceasefire and dialogue, the institutionalization of security guarantees, and sanctions pressure on Russia. The summit also saw progress in defense-industrial cooperation, with the transfer of technical documentation for British components used in SCALP/Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles, allowing Ukraine to establish its own assembly lines.
