Ghislaine Maxwell loses bid to overturn Epstein-linked sex trafficking conviction

On August 26, a US federal judge denied Ghislaine Maxwell's attempt to vacate her conviction on sex trafficking charges. Maxwell, 64, received a 20-year prison sentence and remains the only individual convicted in connection with the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who passed away in a New York jail in 2019. In his decision, Judge Paul Engelmayer dismissed Maxwell's claims that her constitutional rights during trial and sentencing were infringed, stating that these arguments were "all meritless" and "all or almost all are frivolous."

Maxwell's conviction in 2021 stemmed from allegations of supplying underage girls to Epstein, whose extensive connections to influential business executives, politicians, celebrities, and academics sparked widespread scrutiny and conspiracy theories. The recent release of extensive investigative files under a new law has heightened public attention on the case, implicating high-profile figures such as Britain's former Prince Andrew.

In February, Maxwell was subpoenaed to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding her relationship with Epstein, but declined to answer any questions. Her legal team argued she would only speak to the committee if President Trump granted her clemency. The US Supreme Court declined to hear Maxwell's appeal of her sex trafficking conviction in October.

President Trump, who had a long-standing relationship with Epstein, initially opposed the release of the "Epstein files," leading to accusations of a cover-up during his first year in office. Trump has firmly denied any connection to Epstein's alleged crimes.
