Former Australian Test cricketer forced to retire at 27 sues school for head injury in 2014; here's why

Former Australian cricketer Will Pucovski, 27, has filed a lawsuit against Brighton Grammar, a prestigious private school in Melbourne, alleging the institution failed to provide adequate care after he suffered a severe concussion in 2014. The legal action centers on Pucovski's first serious head injury, which occurred during an Australian rules football training session while he was a student at the school.

Pucovski, who retired from professional cricket in April 2024, suffered a total of 13 documented concussions during his cricket career. The 2014 incident, however, proved to be the most significant, leading to his eventual retirement. During the training session, Pucovski was knocked unconscious and subsequently missed several months of school before returning to training shortly after the incident.

The lawsuit highlights the school's failure to handle the head injury properly. Pucovski was walked off the field and then questioned about whether he wished to continue training. He complied, stating that he had no choice, and went on to train for the rest of the day. The following day, Pucovski experienced blurred vision and was subsequently admitted to the hospital a week later.

In a recent interview, Pucovski reflected on how the 2014 concussion changed his life. He described feeling a profound transformation, going from a person who would do anything for his sport to one who rarely left his couch for extended periods. Additionally, Pucovski suffered a final serious concussion in March 2024 during a Sheffield Shield match, which prompted his retirement following advice from an independent medical panel.
