FG Unveils $1bn Social Protection Scheme For Vulnerable Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has introduced a $1 billion social protection scheme aimed at elevating vulnerable Nigerians from dependence on short-term relief to self-reliant economic pathways. Known as the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP), the program was announced alongside four other initiatives to bolster Nigeria's poverty reduction strategies.

The new architecture shifts government focus from emergency aid to proactive empowerment, aiming to move from reactive relief to anticipatory social protection. Dr Bernard Doro, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, highlighted that while the government's economic reforms have improved investor confidence, attention must also be given to shielding citizens from economic shocks and providing sustainable poverty alleviation routes.

The HOPE-SP is designed to identify and assess the needs of vulnerable households, offering appropriate interventions and tracking their progress through a "poverty graduation pathway" leading to economic inclusion. The scheme, coupled with other initiatives like the One-Humanitarian-One Poverty Response System and Emergency Cash Transfer Programme, aims to eliminate duplication in government interventions and strengthen collaboration among federal, state, and local governments, as well as development partners.
