FBI psychiatrist returns as Lindsay Clancy murder trial nears closing arguments

The murder trial for Lindsay Clancy, accused of killing her three young children, resumed on Wednesday as the prosecution called its final witness. FBI psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a senior psychiatrist for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, returned to the stand to testify.

Dr. Saathoff, who has treated thousands of patients with psychosis, expressed skepticism about Clancy’s claim that a voice ordered her to commit the murders. He found it unusual that Clancy believed the voice stopped once she finished strangling the children, as the voice was constant rather than intermittent. Clancy had not previously reported hearing a voice to her medical providers.

Saathoff noted that the voice stopping abruptly after the act does not cure the underlying psychosis. He has not encountered such a case in his experience. Clancy’s timeline of when she first heard the voice the day of the murders differed from other evaluators, further casting doubt on her account.

After Dr. Saathoff's examination, defense attorney Kevin Reddington will question him before the defense makes its closing arguments, potentially as early as Thursday.
