Elanco completes Kansas facility expansion for antibody drugs

Elanco Animal Health Incorporated, headquartered in Indianapolis, has completed a $120 million expansion at its manufacturing facility in Elwood, Kansas. The 25,000-square-foot addition significantly boosts the site's capacity for producing monoclonal antibody drugs by over four times. The project includes new processing equipment, a pilot plant for process development and clinical testing, a quality control laboratory, and support areas.

Elanco's investment in the Kansas facility is expected to reach $150 million by 2028, following an additional $30 million planned expenditure for warehousing.

The expanded manufacturing capability will support the production of two key products: Befrena (tirnovetmab), a monoclonal antibody injection used to treat canine allergic and atopic dermatitis, and Trutect, approved in 2025 as a therapeutic for canine parvovirus. Elanco reports that demand for Befrena is currently more than double what was initially expected, and management anticipates reaching unconstrained production levels in early 2027.

Grace McArdle, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing and Quality at Elanco, emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion, stating that it aligns with the company's ambition to execute its most promising pipeline of products. Elanco currently holds a unique position among animal health companies, being one of only two with approved monoclonal antibody solutions.

Recent market research indicates that pet health and wellness remain a top priority for U.S. pet owners, even as costs increase in other sectors. The expansion was finalized in 2024.
