Dog injured, woman bitten in 2 new canine attack cases in Hong Kong

Hong Kong authorities are investigating two recent dog attack incidents that resulted in injuries to a dog and a woman, amid growing safety concerns following two more deadly attacks last week. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) was alerted to the first incident by the police, which involved a dog sustaining injuries from an unleashed woman and her four other dogs in Tsuen Wan. The woman fled the scene without providing contact information or cooperating with authorities.

In the second incident, a woman was bitten by a mongrel dog on her left foot in Kennedy Town at 11.09 PM on Tuesday. The woman required treatment at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam due to bleeding and swelling. It is unclear whether the dog was leashed at the time of the attack.

These incidents follow two other high-profile dog attacks last week that resulted in death. The first attack involved a 60kg mixed-breed dog killing two smaller dogs near Yoho Mall in Yuen Long. The second incident saw 33-year-old Wong Cho-yi die after being mauled by a dog at her pet training center in Ping Yeung Tsuen.

In response to the recent attacks, Hong Kong authorities have pledged to review the definition of fighting dogs and related regulations to enhance public safety. Under the Rabies Ordinance, leaving a dog unleashed in public areas is illegal, with offenders facing a HK$10,000 fine upon conviction. The Dangerous Dog Regulations also require dogs weighing 20kg or more to be leashed in public, with violators facing up to three months of imprisonment and a HK$25,000 fine.

Dog attack reports in Hong Kong have increased, with 237 incidents reported in the first quarter of this year, compared to 891 reports last year, marking a rise from 805 in 2024.
