Digitalwährung: Bundesbankvorstand für Integration des digitalen Euro in Wero Wallet

Bundesbank-Vorstand Lutz Lienenkämper emphasized on Wednesday at the Bundesbank's payment systems symposium in Frankfurt that connecting new and existing offerings is crucial for the European payment system, particularly for the central future project - the digital Euro. He suggested integrating the digital Euro into the Wero Wallet, a digital payment system that allows instant transfers between bank accounts.

Wero is operated by the European Payments Initiative, a coalition of European banks and payment providers, including Deutsche Bank. Lienenkämper believes that integrating the digital Euro into the Wero Wallet could expand the reach of European payment solutions and enable seamless collaboration between new and existing systems. However, Bundesbank head Joachim Nagel has already raised concerns that a digital Euro might undermine private initiatives for a European payment solution.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has selected a number of payment service providers from the Eurozone to participate in a pilot project for the digital Euro, including major players such as Deutsche Bank and Italian Unicredit. ECB Director Piero Cipollone stated that the launch is scheduled for September 2027, with an official introduction of the digital Euro expected no earlier than 2029.
