Diamondbacks 2, Cubs 0: Matthew Boyd shines, but the offense vanishes

The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in the series finale, ending their three-game series with a 2-4 record. Starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was the standout performer for the Diamondbacks, while the Cubs' offense was notably absent in this series. The Cubs had outscored the Diamondbacks 11-7 in the previous three games, but that didn't secure a series win.

In Wednesday's game, Arizona's pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandyn Garcia, and Juan Morillo held the Cubs scoreless despite just two hits, resulting in the Cubs' 2-0 loss and their overall 2-4 road trip. The Cubs were able to get excellent work from all three of their starting pitchers, with Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes, and Boyd limiting the Diamondbacks to eight hits and one run in 20 total innings.

However, a blown save and Rodriguez's excellent pitching ultimately led to the Cubs' loss. The Cubs struggled to score throughout the series, with their only hit after the fifth inning coming from Tyrone Taylor, who singled leading off the fifth inning and eventually stole second base. Despite this, they were unable to capitalize on the Diamondbacks' pitching, as the offense vanished in the later innings.
