Crisis in Kwara NUJ Council over suspension of three members

A significant dispute has erupted within the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists over the suspension of three of its members. The suspension came after a meeting of the National Council of the union in Dutse, Jigawa State, on August 11, 2026. The three members - Adamu Usman Sabi, Mosunmola Ayobami and Dare Akogun - were suspended for alleged involvement in a court case challenging the outcome of the council's controversial election.

The election installed the current executives, led by Abdullateef Ahmed, who is also the targeted target of the current dispute. The aggrieved members, at a press conference in Ilorin, described the suspension as "a matter of grave concern." They emphasized their commitment to the NUJ and its principles of justice, fairness, due process and the protection of members' rights.

They expressed concern that the suspension decision was made without an opportunity for the suspended members to defend themselves. They also raised questions about the alleged influence of the suspension decision on the misleading presentation of the circumstances surrounding the court case. The members called for an independent investigation into the matter before the suspension could take effect.

They urged the national leadership to ensure fair hearing and due process in all disciplinary proceedings. They also demanded that the Kwara State Council Chairman, Abdulateef 'Lanre Ahmed, be suspended pending an investigation into his role in the matter. The members believe that the NUJ's credibility will be strengthened by such steps.

They maintain that the NUJ cannot effectively advocate for justice and fairness in society while compromising those values within its own ranks.
