Counterpoint: iPhone 17 topped worldwide smartphone sales during Q2

In a report released today, Counterpoint Research reveals that Apple once again topped the list of the world's best-selling smartphones during the second quarter of 2026. The tech giant held five positions in the top ten, with the iPhone 17 leading the pack, accounting for 6% of global smartphone unit sales. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro secured the second and third spots, respectively, while the iPhone 17e ranked seventh. The iPhone 16 came in tenth place.

Samsung was the only other manufacturer to secure a spot in the top ten, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G claiming the fourth position. The remaining smartphones in the top ten were from Samsung: the Galaxy A07 4G, Galaxy A17 5G, Galaxy A17 4G, Galaxy S26 5G.

Counterpoint Research's Senior Analyst Karn Chauhan attributes Apple's success to a 5% year-over-year growth in unit sales, despite a decline in the broader market. The iPhone 17 series played a significant role in Apple's performance, with the base model being the best-selling smartphone during the quarter. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max sales also saw a boost, driven by trade-in programs, promotions, and accessible financing options.

The senior analyst further highlights that strong demand for premium smartphones contributed to the overall growth, as rising prices pushed consumers towards higher-end segments, strengthening Apple's competitive position.
