Cockroaches, rotten food, ‘gutka’ packet: FSSAI issues notices to JW Marriott, Andaz Aerocity Delhi

On Wednesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) served notices to two five-star hotels in Delhi's Aerocity after inspections revealed multiple food safety and hygiene violations. The hotels, JW Marriott and Andaz Aerocity, were found to be in violation of FSSAI requirements and regulations.

At JW Marriott, inspectors discovered cockroaches, fruit flies, inadequate pest-control measures, poor upkeep of food preparation and storage areas, spoiled food, fungal growth, and improper storage practices. The hotel was also found lacking proper labeling and endorsement for certain food products, and retailing activities were carried out without the necessary endorsement.

Andaz Aerocity was also found to have cockroaches near freezers, houseflies, mosquitoes in the grinding room, spider webs, expired food products, inadequate temperature monitoring, improper allergen segregation, poor waste management, and other structural and maintenance issues. The hotel was also found to have stored expired sweets, an expired cake base, and bread packets.

The FSSAI will determine further action against the hotels once laboratory testing of the collected samples is complete. In recent months, FSSAI has been cracking down on food business operators and e-commerce platforms for various violations, including misleading claims, improper labeling, and advertisements.
