Chinese vacuum maker Dreame withdraws 'Star Project' to expand into EVs

Chinese vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dreame has scrapped its ambitious plan to launch luxury electric vehicles, dubbing the decision a "proactive strategic choice." The Star Project, which aimed to create the world's fastest car and open showrooms in the Middle East, was to commence in 2025. Company representatives revealed the withdrawal, citing careful consideration of the auto industry's research and development processes, production cycles, market competition, and other factors.

Dreame stated that the decision would not have a significant impact on its operations or financial status, as the EV project had not yet reached commercial mass production or required substantial investment. The company's intellectual property, technical expertise, and research would be repurposed for smart mobility, robotics, and other areas within its R&D platform.

The workforce, which had swelled to nearly 1,000 employees at its peak, has now been downsized to a few dozen individuals responsible for supplier settlements and corporate deregistration. Dreame is now shifting its focus to smart homes, outdoor living, smart mobility, and embodied AI, with its core product development, production, sales, delivery, and after-sales services continuing as planned.
