Chiefs complete NFL trade with Giants to add help for Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce

The Kansas City Chiefs have strengthened their offensive line by acquiring Josh Ezeudu from the New York Giants in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. The move comes as the Chiefs have struggled with a lack of depth in their offensive line throughout the preseason, with Kingsley Suamataia and Trey Smith forming the lead options. With Patrick Mahomes' success heavily reliant on a strong offensive line, the Chiefs have bolstered their backup options to protect their quarterback.

Ezeudu, a 26-year-old former third-round pick, has played in 33 NFL games over his career, appearing in 10 starts while missing the entirety of last season due to a calf injury. Despite his limited experience, he possesses the versatility to play as either a left or right guard, and has even played as left tackle. This adaptability will allow the Chiefs to maximize the potential of younger players like Kahlil Benson, who can learn his preferred role without having to adapt to new styles on the fly.

The Chiefs' potential five-man offensive line, consisting of LT Josh Simmons, LG Kingsley Suamataia, C Creed Humphrey, RG Jaylon Smith, and RT Jaylon Moore, can be elite if bolstered by strong backup options like Ezeudu. While his current backup options have underperformed during training camp, Ezeudu's low-cost, high-upside acquisition provides the Chiefs with a valuable safety net, especially as Mahomes continues to recover from a torn ACL.

This move will provide additional protection for Mahomes during early games, allowing him to acclimate to the 2023 season. If Ezeudu remains healthy and productive throughout the campaign, he could become a key contributor to the Chiefs' offense, potentially even surpassing expectations.
