ChatGPT can now do things on your behalf without seeing your login details

OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT, allowing the AI assistant to perform tasks on behalf of users without accessing their login information. Users can now request that ChatGPT handle tasks such as setting up utilities, booking medical appointments, purchasing or cancelling flights, or rearranging package deliveries. OpenAI explains that ChatGPT Work, a task management agent within the chatbot, accomplishes these actions through a secure cloud browser that can interact with public and signed-in websites.

Users initiate tasks by writing prompts, and ChatGPT then generates a secure form for logging into the website using a remote browser. The user must approve the website and complete any two-factor authentication. OpenAI emphasizes that the user's login credentials are never visible to the model and are not stored by ChatGPT. The company also reviews sign-in requests for phishing attempts.

Users can control which websites ChatGPT has access to in the chatbot settings. Before performing actions that could lead to significant real-world commitments, ChatGPT prompts users for confirmation. Current ChatGPT users can already connect their bank accounts and medical records to the platform, indicating this is a natural progression in handing over more control to AI.
