Brewers manager Pat Murphy benches rookie Cooper Pratt in 10-inning loss to Mets

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy pulled rookie Cooper Pratt from the lineup during a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets in 10 innings on Tuesday night. Pratt failed to bunt down a ball and didn’t run hard out of the batter's box upon a bloop single. Murphy deemed Pratt's lack of effort unacceptable, stating, "I've got to be better.

It's not winning baseball." Pratt acknowledged his mistake, saying, "I didn't help the team win and it won't happen again, that's for sure." The incident occurred in the fifth inning, when Pratt paused in the batter's box and then ran to first base at normal speed after hitting a fly ball to shallow right field. He was immediately replaced by pinch-runner David Hamilton, who later committed a walk-off throwing error at third base in the tenth inning.

Pratt, who turned 22 last week, made his major league debut on June 16 after signing an eight-year, $50.75 million contract with the Brewers. Despite expressing remorse, Pratt emphasized that it won't happen again, stating, "I love the kid and I believe in the kid immensely, but he's got to be a player that does those things. It's just not tolerated. By anybody. It sends a message to everybody else, too — you've got to run."
